Baby Boomers, It's Time To Monetize Your Hobbies
Roger Nusbaum
www.seekingalpha.com

Overview: “I had a moment of clarity on the stairmaster yesterday, and while I am far from early on this thought, it is grim for society nonetheless. Based on various things I read and anecdotal observations, I am convinced that baby boomers (I am using this term for economy of space, not for rigid age parameters) are going to spend beyond their means, looting their nest eggs, and one way or another will end up living for years way below the lifestyle they tried to save for.”

‘Extreme Stress’ For Baby Boomers
Selena Maranjian
www.fool.com

Overview: “You'd think that baby boomers would be sitting pretty right about now. None of them are even close to their 70s -- the oldest are only 62 years old, and the youngest are turning just 44. Many have empty nests now, with retirement waiting right around the corner. Others are in the thick of their prime earning years, in the middle of their careers. Many own their own homes and drive nice cars. But you know what? They're stressed out.”

Can We Talk?

Today we are featuring a guest blog from Ben Finzel of FH Out Front.

Media coverage about baby boomers continues to consume public attention, but as we’ve noted before, coverage about gayby boomers still lags behind. The flap over Tom Brokaw’s seeming omission of gay people from his book "Boom!" is but the latest example of this trend.

As Baby Boomers Begin Turning 'Magic' Age Of 62, There's Urge To Retire
www.mercurynews.com

Overview: “The oldest baby boomers are turning 62 this year, and some are using that as the catalyst to consider retiring. It's possible because they can begin collecting their Social Security benefits at that age, though at a lower level than if they wait until their full retirement age of 66 or older. But before quitting their jobs, baby boomers need to think long and hard about whether they're ready financially and psychologically to move into the next phase of their lives, experts say.”

If I Can Market To Me, I Can Market To Any Cynic

Today we are featuring a guest blog from Janet Greenlee, General Manager of Fleishman-Hillard in Austin, Texas. She is an FH Boom champ, and currently serves on a panel concerned with marketing to baby boomers in entertainment through the use of technology.

Having been in one marketing discipline or other all my life, I'm pretty jaded. And private. Or so I thought. I've also been very involved in understanding the "boomer" dynamics most of my boomer adult life -- yes, we're the demographic tier that we were calling mid-youth a while back. The moniker varies -- we are also called collectors, students, "matures." Yeah, whatever, we're aging so we're in a wonderful state of denial. It's this denial I can connect with and relish for as long as possible until I get the occasional reminder from my physical being (that's also called defiance of my mental being.) So, what has this to do with marketing to those of us over 50?

Aging Boomers Could Burst Housing Bubble
Lew Sichelman

But according to a study by two University of Southern California researchers, a bubble of even more monumental proportions lies just ahead. They call it the ‘generational housing bubble,’ and maintain that it will be fueled by the same Baby Boomers who have been bidding up prices since 1970 as they moved higher and higher on the housing ladder.”

Book Offers Boomers A Fresh Take On Retirement
Colleen Long

Overview: “The story goes like this: A couple in their early 60s scrimped and saved, and retired to their dream home in France. But eight months after they arrived at their chateau, the couple were miserable. They missed their friends and clubs back home. They missed working, and lounging around all day was costlier than they expected. So they moved back to their old lives. The moral of the story: Retirement ain't what it used to be.”
