Disaboom

Online social networking is becoming increasingly popular not just among teenagers, but among niche audiences. A study conducted by Nielson/Netratings revealed that traffic among the top 10 social networking sites grew by a whopping 47% over the last year. So it isn’t surprising that specialized sites are regularly surfacing in order to meet the demands of diverse and growing online audiences—who want to share everything from their favorite movies, to business profiles, to books and photos.

I was thrilled to see one site that will no doubt be a great resource for the 50+, who are both caregivers and in some cases, want to tap into this kind of support system themselves. It’s called Disaboom, and offers content and tools ranging from health information to “daily living” resources, medical news, career advice, dating support, travel tips and networking to those who are disabled or functionally limited.

With over 50 million adults with disabilities in the U.S. alone, and a surging aging population, the Denver-based site will likely become a magnet for many families who are looking for one place to provide many answers and badly needed support when their lives are temporarily—or in some cases permanently—turned upside down. Ford, Netflix and Johnson & Johnson are among the crown jewels of advertisers on the site, which already caters to over 180 million people.

What I like most about it is the fact that it focuses on disability and functional limitation in a way that is real. People who are tackling various disabilities tell their stories, but the overarching message is about moving forward with life and embracing it wholeheartedly with others who are doing the same.

I read an article on Disaboom a few days ago that I stumbled across on Digg. It was about ADA legislation and the discrimination that many with disabilities still face at the workplace despite the passage of the ADA. If you're interested you can check it out here
