It seems that even in death, the boomers won’t be submissive according to a recent piece in Reuters. They are once again shaking things up by injecting new and colorful elements into the traditional funeral rite. This mainly involves personalizing the service in a way that really celebrates the deceased person’s life.

Today, “celebrants” (think new age priest, rabbi or minister) work with family members to create a ceremony that shines a spotlight on their loved one’s personality. For example, funeral celebrant Sandra Bell-Buttars ensured that an urn containing a woman who had worked in the trucking business was hauled away in a tractor trailer. (Somehow I’m not sure the deceased trucker would have appreciated this gesture…seems somewhat irreverent to me…but then who knows, perhaps she had a bold if not gallant sense of humor).
What this really reveals is the ongoing need for boomers to not only personalize their experiences, but also to find utmost (and perhaps ‘positive’) meaning in even the weariest moments of their lives. Macabre? Maybe. But I don’t think so. This is just another example of how this generation is helping to lead the way.
