Either AARP is getting younger or I’m getting older. But for someone who once recoiled at the shock of being invited to join an organization dedicated to 50+, I’ve got to tell you that it isn’t so many years later that I finally got around to attending their annual national event--and had a big surprise.
For the rest of today's blog, continue at "The Boomer Blog"
Forget about our parents’ AARP. For me and many of the thousands who attended Life@50+, the convention was all about Rod Stewart, Earth, Wind and Fire and Whoopi Goldberg. For me personally, it was also about business networking, drum circles, respected authorities from the boomer generation discussing the impact of our generation’s impact on the economy. (Hillary Clinton, David Walker, Robert Reich, Thomas Oliphant, John Rother, amongst them).
It was also about walking the aisles of the exhibition hall, seeing one product and service after another that actually apply to the real challenges and opportunities of being 50+. This was about seeing a whole bunch of people who look more or less the same age as me and not feeling for once that I was either one of the oldest (or youngest) on the convention floor.
Here’s to next year, in DC—another year older and hipper: and I’m talking about both AARP and me!

I went, too, and I had a blast! I am not so fearful now about getting older.
