I get acid reflux when I hear that 60 is the new 40. The new 60 is the new 60 because no one’s ever lived it the way we are now. One of my yenta friends and I were of course speaking about another friend and commenting about her take on this aging of ours. According to her, she’d had her turn. Turn at what? Sure, we had our turn at adolescence, teenaging, marriage and motherhood. But now it’s our turn at olderhood and we’re exploring with the same tenacity as when we took our first steps.

Then there’s another acquaintance that joins no hope singles clubs, attends every grown up prom and sock hop and loses her SELF in a very focused and painful search for a new man.
For so long my identity was defined by my wifehood and motherhood that it’s kind of refreshing to look at where I am now as an okay place. It’s my turn at being the new 60, able to define me for the first time and make decisions to take me to unexplored places.
As another friend said … “it’s much easier to ride the horse in the direction its going.” Hold that thought but let the reins go slack.
