Samurai at Rest: Japan's workaholic baby boomers shift gears for retirement
AP
Mainichi Daily News
March 30, 2007

Overview: This article focuses on baby boomer retirement in Japan. Associated Press reports, “Planners expect over half the boomers to stay productive well past 60, and the government won't hazard a guess as to how many will retire this year, but Nippon Life Insurance Co. estimates some 1.12 million will leave the work force over the next three years. Although that's less than a quarter of the over-60 workers, Japan's boomer-retirement wave is coming much harder and faster than America's.” Moreover, “All sorts of new products and services await the flood of Japan's wealthiest-ever generation into the leisure, real estate and travel markets. Boomers hold an estimated 10 percent of total personal financial assets in Japan, according to a 2004 study by Dai-ichi Life Research Institute.”

Is Generation X Ready to Take Over From Baby Boomers?
Ron DeYoung
American Chronicle
March 29, 2007

Overview: DeYoung reflects on the baby boomer generation and compares the generation to Generation X. He writes, “Mine was the generation of rebellion, experimentation and discovery. We protested policy, danced to rock and roll and became the desired target of advertisers because we had money and love to spend it.” Additionally he suggests, “Generation X is the first generation to be diagnosed with a disease that caused them to under perform or over act. They are promptly prescribed a pill that will supposedly treat their laziness, puberty, sloth, lack of interest and confusion. Today there are things called ADD, ADHD, OCD, BPD and a slew of different types of depression. Baby Boomers were just badly behaved, easily distracted, sad or moody. I wonder what we could have accomplished had we been diagnosed and properly medicated.”
