In their growing collection of 70,000 boomer “Life Dreams,” Eons.com, a new web site for people 50 and over, reveals that nearly half of the top 100 goals boomers want to accomplish on their way to living to age 100 center around travel. Not passive travel either – adventure travel, multigenerational travel, experiential travel, meaningful journeys.
Featured and posted on November 10, Brenda Russell’s Baltimore Times Online story quotes Ronnie Mae Weiss, an Eons travel expert. She talks about active vacations and how boomers train with friends or with a personal trainer prior to a trip.
And I thought I was the only one. I started working out with a personal trainer about 18 months ago because I couldn’t climb the steps on a family vacation in medieval Italy. I was embarrassed, concerned and probably just as demoralizing; it gave my already-on-his way-out-but-I didn’t-know-it husband another reason to demean me. Oops, did I say that out loud? That’s another story and not for a company-based blog.
For me the most important reason for training now is keeping up. Keeping up at work since retirement is not on my agenda; keeping up for those journeys – my next being a Mongolia and the Silk Road adventure; and if Eons.com is an online totem of life expectancy, totally enjoying my next twenty plus years. And I’m not alone.
With approximately 8,000 Americans turning 50 every day and with $2 to $3 trillion in annual disposable income in their bank accounts, it’s no wonder the travel industry is turning their attention to boomers. Travel can be as personalized as your “Life Dreams.” Smithsonian, National Geographic and Abercrombie & Kent to name a few can make those dreams come true. My favorite is the $50,000 private jet that takes you on a supersonic version of Marco Polo’s Silk Road travels.
Just as importantly as having the money in your pocket and all the right accessories … you need to be able to climb, breathe, enjoy. Do it to keep up.
